The first single from Gotye's third record, Eyes Wide Open is a slice of driving dystopian pop that steps away from his previous sample-based sound collage aesthetic.
Featuring bass sounds from a large musical instrument installation in outback Queensland, Australia called the Winton Musical Fence and a languid pedal steel guitar part that conjures up images of a vast, empty wasteland, Eyes Wide Open lies somewhere between alarmist politi-pop and starry-eyed nihilism wrapped up in singalong vocal hooks and weighty drum figures.
This limited edition 10" vinyl release features a brooding monster of a remix by PVT, and two exclusive tracks not for sale digitally (Atimot Ot Edo; a sound experiment that recalls the work of pioneering analogue sound painter Isao Tomita, and Smoke and Mirrors; a stirring collision of latin-jazz samples, afro-beat percussion jammery and split-personality vocal interplay).
A free download card for all four tracks is included with the package.
